Well the Jubilee weekend has come and gone, a celebration that has been building since the Jubilee Committee met for the first time last June. The jubilee committee comprised of Alix Haywood, Barbara Benton, Ruth Holden, John Barry and myself in the chair. When I was elected president of the club Alix kindly took over chairing the Jubilee Committee and I remained on, to liaise between the two Committees. Early this year Betty Johnson was co-opted onto the Jubilee Committee. The celebrations starting on the Saturday with the Jubilee luncheon followed by the Jubilee Restricted Tournament on the Sunday was a great success and a real team effort and there are many people to thank for that. I will start by thanking John Earwaker for weeding our garden, trimming shrubs and weed spraying thus making the frontage tidy and to May Parlane, thank you for the lovely Jubilee cake. Then there are all the folk who after play on the Friday set up the rooms ready for the luncheon, then after the luncheon re-set the room for the tournament and after that re-set again for normal club bridge. Gay McLaughlin and Maureen Fraser were responsible for the magnificent flower arrangements that decorated the room. Betty Johnson also provided flower arrangements, the decoration of the tables, the beautifully hand made serviette rings and the novel way of hanging the balloons without a ladder. Thanks to Barbara and Rodney Benton for the puff to blow up the balloons. Anne Bovet was our photographer over the weekend and took some very nice photographs. These are now on a disc and will be printed off and entered in the clubs photograph album for all to see.

Olga Irwin took care of the buttonholes and sprays while Margaret Smith looked after the raffles. Paul did a brief history of the club for the courier and Freda made a wonderful job of the invitations to past members and guests and also the name tags. Lenis supplied and made all the nibbles served before the luncheon and thanks to the ladies who handed them around. Who can forget Edite’s “Diamonds are a girls best friend” and M.C. Bruce’s stories as he wove the proceedings together. Alix, chair of the jubilee committee sent out the invitations and received the replies liaising with Freda on the design of the invitations and name tags and also with Anne Williamson who was again our Tournament Secretary not to mention making sure that all was in order. Lenis O’Connor and Janet Anderton made all the purchases for the tournament lunches, the buns being freshly baked that morning and assembled with a team of helpers. The helpers being Bonnie Donaldson, Margaret Olson, Debbie Howarth and Susan Whyte, the latter two are currently in Morna’s bridge classes so we hope to see more of them at the club. Thank you also to those who supplied a plate for morning tea. A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL TAKE A BOW – YOU DID YOUR CLUB PROUD The feedback from both days has been tremendous. A piece of Jubilee cake and a pen were taken to long-time members Vera Barlow, Pat Henton and Pat Cleave at Camellia rest home, also to, Bob Douglas and Girlie Quin at Freeman Court, Elsie Russell at Windsor Court, Joyce Walmsley at Tauranga and Hazel Campbell who due to her health couldn’t be with us that day. Warm Regards Brian |
