Coming Up …

Kairangi Multi-grade Tournament 19 September

This year our Multi-grade Tournament will be played as a teams event. We would love to see many of our members playing in this as it covers all grades – no excuses for this one. It is not too early to enter – details of the format and the entry form are on the noticeboard now.

But, if you decide not to play you may wish to offer your services on ‘kitchen’ duty or for dealing or as a caddy for the boards.  Please contact Tony 388 3472 if you can help in some way.

Congratulations!

Our members have had success at various recent tournaments:

Tereska Knap & Zbigniew Ceregra 2nd at the Upper Hutt Intermediate

Stephan Prentice and Partner top Junior Pair at both the Waikanae and Hutt Multi-grades

Allan Joseph & Rosa Mishkin 3rd at the Hutt Multi-grade and recorded the top score for the day of 67.43% in the 1st session

Sushila Kumar & partner 1st in the Intermediate Pairs at Wellington Mini Congress

Judy Manhart & Claire McAllister session prize in the Open Pairs at the Wellington Mini Congress

Congratulations to them and all the others who participated.

A Big Day Out – Wednesday, 28 July

This event run by the Park Bowling Club was another success story; with 11 tables.  There was very good support from Kairangi with a few visitors from other clubs.  A nice lunch was served; and there were many happy raffle winners.

North/South Winners: Ruth Gotlieb & Sushila Kumar

East/West Winners: Violet Wellbrock & Jen McCaw (Vic)

Table Covers

There is a surplus of table covers in good condition.  If you want one please ask a committee member. A gold coin donation would be appreciated.

Keeping in Touch

We do our best - Members who aren’t well or are no longer able to attend as active players are phoned and sent cards – get well/ thinking of you on behalf of all Club members.  So if you know of anyone who hasn’t been at the Bridge table recently please let a Committee member know and we can get a cheerful note to them.

At the end of Play…

Please remember to leave the room tidy for the next session:

-          pick-up any rubbish around the table and empty the bins

-          tidy-up the bridge stationery and pens on the table

-          straighten up the chairs and side tables

-          check all the scores on the traveller, and return travellers, boards and cards to a clear table near the Director’s table

Trivia – Did You Know ?

Each king on playing cards represents a king in real history – Spades: King David; Clubs: Alexander the Great;  Hearts: Charlemagne and Diamonds: Julius Caesar.

Put that old money to good use !

Are you aware that the Lions in combination with Resene Paints are collecting:

-          all obsolete NZ coins & notes, including pre-decimal;

-          all foreign currency (coins & notes), whether obsolete or current.

The Reserve Bank calculates that there is about $100 million obsolete NZ currency sitting around drawers and odd corners in peoples homes / businesses and even a small portion of this could be put to very good use in supporting various Lions youth orientated activities. Lions have made arrangements with the Reserve Bank to cash up all such NZ currency and special arrangements have also been made for foreign currency.

Kairangi members may have noticed a colourful 4 litre tin on the table in the supper room. Please support a very worthwhile cause and bring along any suitable currency and place it in the tin. Tony Sutich who is a member of the Eastern Suburbs Lions will clear the tin periodically and if any Kairangi members have larger volumes of notes or already sorted currency, they can contact Tony for delivery arrangements.

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Robin Mellsop. Robin was not only a very regular player at the club but contributed in many other ways. She was largely responsible for the initial set-up of the club’s website and until quite recently also served as Tuesday partner co-ordinator.

DIRECTOR’S CORNER AUGUST 2010

THE APPEALS PROCESS

The Law

Law 92 gives a Contestant (or a Team Captain) the right for a review of any ruling made at his/her table by the Director.  The right to request an appeal expires 30 minutes after the official scores have been made available.

The Process

All Appeals shall be made through the Director, but in the very rare case if the Director is unreceptive, an appeal may be made through the Match Committee or a member of the club committee.

The Appeals Committee

The Appeals Committee should ideally be comprised of 3 members but in no circumstances more than 5 members.  The Appeals Committee should be appointed (and announced) prior to the start of a Tournament, but if this is overlooked the Director shall assume responsibility for this.  One member of the Appeals Committee is appointed as Chairman to conduct the appeals hearing in consultation with the Director.

The Appeal

Players may Appeal against a Directors Ruling when –

·         the facts are in dispute, or

·         an innocent party believes that he/she has not gained an equitable adjustment for damage suffered, or

·         the offending side believes that the Director has erred in the application of the law and/or his/her bridge judgement.

Requirements

N.Z. Bridge requires a wholly courteous manner from the Committee Members and the Players.  The Appeals Committee should hear the evidence ensuring that there is as little interruption as possible.  All involved should be given a full hearing.

If you are asked to be on the Appeals Committee remember you are not expected to know the Laws; you are expected to contribute your experience and objective decision making.

Appeals without Merit

Where an Appeal against the Director’s ruling is unsuccessful and adjudged to be frivolous by the Appeals Committee, a procedural penalty maybe given.

Further Appeals

The decision of the on-site Appeals Committee is final but a further Appeal to the National Authority is allowed only in certain circumstances, viz. dishonourable practices.

The Kairangi Bridge Club News Update – July 2010

Coming Up – The Mid-Winter Social – 22 July

This is the official welcome for our learners who have been taking the lessons with Lorraine and her great team.  Mark this fun occasion in your diary.  There will be a special supper, prizes for winners and a raffle with great prizes.  Drinks will be served from 7pm onwards, play will start around 7.30pm.  $7 or a plate of food.  Form on the notice board to fill in.  We hope to see you all there.  Monday/Tuesday partnerships will be organised and the new members assigned mentors.

Appreciation and Thanks

This is a special tribute to Lorraine Sutich, and her team of willing helpers (Rosa Mishkin, Anna Nauta and Desley Wilson, and the stand-by player Dave Douglas) who have given generously of their time teaching and encouraging the new players, at the lessons on Tuesday evenings. Thanks to you all for your dedication.

A Sea of Green

Yes, the new table covers for the playing room have arrived. And don’t they look good?  Thanks to the friendly upholstery craftsman of Constable Street.

Table Covers

There is a surplus of table covers.  If you want one they are on the table in the tearoom.  Please place a ‘gold coin’ donation in the Suggestion Box.

Obituary

It is with sadness that I report the passing of Helen Vanston, a long-time member of the Club.

Thought:   Change is inevitable, except of course from a vending machine.

First Aid Box

There is a copy of procedures for recognising and dealing with someone who is ‘hypoglaecemic’, both on the notice board and in the First Aid box (cloakroom shelf); plus a container of Jelly Beans for the instant ‘sugar shot’.  It is worth spending a few minutes reading this important info.

Manners at the Table

At all times please be polite and understanding of others; and remember the saying “patience is a virtue”. This is always worth practising.

A Big Day Out – Wednesday, 28 July

The Park Bowling Club Kilbirnie invites everyone to their ‘Bridge Day’, starting at 11am.  A great lunch will be served, with drink and nibbles at the end of play.  Further details will be on the noticeboard soon.

Winter Warmth

The even heating of the playing room to suit all is problematic.  As well as the heating on, it is necessary to have a little fresh air to stop the room getting stuffy.

Insufficient Bids

If a player makes an ‘insufficient bid’ it is vital to call the Director for his/her guidance.  Please do not attempt to adjust this wrong bid, as it can easily escalate the problem.

The Lions Charity Tournament – Saturday, 8 May

“A Roar of Approval” by all who attended; - 23½   tables.  There was morning tea, a grand lunch prepared by Willie Wong and his helpers; with drinks and nibbles at the end of play.  There were many session and grade winners and plenty of happy raffle winners.

A total of $3,700 was raised by the Eastern Suburb Lions for ‘Camp Quality’ for children with cancer.

Over 70’s Club - Over the last few months.

Mon, 8 March: Ann Buckley/Deidre Forde – 74.84%

Mon, 12 Apl: Rosa Mishkin/Zbgniew Ceregra - 72.55%

                                                           Please see over

Wellinton Region Mini-Congress – 9-11 July

  At the Wellington Club

This is the major event of the year in our Region and it caters for all grades.  We wish to encourage as many of our Members as possible to enter.  Details of the events and timings are on our notice board or you can contact Tony Sutich 388 3472, or Allan Joseph 389 8514 for more details.

Entry date has been extended to Tuesday 6 July.  We are also short of helpers to assist with general duties on the last day – Sunday 11 July; so if you can spare an hour or so, particularly around lunchtime to help (and kibitz / watch bridge in less busy periods) please contact Tony or Allan.

Directors Corner

Alert or Not?

1.      Opponents open 1NT, and partner overcalls 2NT showing both minors (Hamilton or similar). Should you alert the 2NT?      No, a cue bid of opponent’s suit or denomination is self-alerting.

2.      Opponents open 1NT, and your partner Doubles (you play Lionel defence where the X  shows spades and another). Do you alert the X?     No, Doubles and redoubles are self alerting, but you should have pre alerted this.

3.      Partner opens 1NT, and opponents overcall 2C showing both majors. You respond 2H asking partner (opener) for a stopper. Should the 2H be alerted?    No, it is a cue bid of a suit shown by the opponent’s 2C bid.

4.      Partner opens 1NT, and you are playing a variable NT (weak when not vulnerable, but stronger when Vulnerable). Do you alert this 1NT opening bid?   No, but you should pre- alert your variable NT.

5.      Opponents open 1C Precision. Your partner overcalls 3C. Should you alert this? No, it is a cue bid of opponents bid suit, even though the 1C shows only 16+ HCP with no further explanation.

6.       Partner opens 1S. Opponent doubles. You are playing “Truscott“ after opponent’s X so you respond 2S with less than 6HCP. Should this 2S be alerted? No, a single raise need not be alerted.

But if you responded 3S, with say 6-9 HCP, you should alert it because it is a “pre-emptive raise “

Similarly if you responded 2NT (showing “solid support”), you should alert this because it is a conventional call.

7.      Partner opens 1H, and you respond 2S showing 6 spades and a very weak hand.

Should you alert this 2S bid? Yes, if it is non- forcing.

Remember, the purpose of alerting partner’s calls is to disclose your partnership agreement as required by the Laws of Duplicate Bridge.

Failure to alert when an alert is required is deemed misinformation, and if the opponents are damaged as a result of this, they are eligible for redress.

If you are unsure as to which of your calls need alerting, please check with one of our

many club directors who are always happy to help.

The Kairangi Bridge Club News Update – April 2010

Kerr Cup – Friday 19 March

WE WON, WE WON.

There was a group of ecstatic members when they realised they had achieved an outstanding result –

Kairangi 57% and Kapi Mana 43% overall.

There were 16 pairs entered from Kairangi, and well done to all of you, especially Glen and Ann Ballantyne with their top score – 69.68%.  And, interestingly Kairangi pairs filled the top six places.

Thanks

A big thank you to Shirley Binks, and Kitty O’Shea’s Irish Bar for support and a very generous donation towards the Intermediate Tournament, held 28 February.

Online Diary of Events and Room Use

On the Club website - find ‘what’s on’.  The Web:  www.contractbridge.net/kairangi, then ‘News’.

Lessons

A good number are attending these ‘beginners’ lessons run again by Lorraine and her team of willing helpers.  If you know of anyone who has played previously and is interested in brushing up playing skills, it is not too late to join in.  Pass their name and details to Lorraine Sutich Tel 388 3472.

Interclub Teams - 1st Round Friday, 26 March.  A great start for the Junior and Novice teams who both had good wins, particularly the Novice team who scored the maximum VP’s. Unfortunately the Open team and both Intermediates did not fare so well.  Better luck next time.  The next round will be played Friday 23 April.  Always check the notice board, or call Rosa 389-8514.

Thought:  Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

Wednesday Bridge – Starting 14 April

Are you interested in joining this group?  All are very welcome.  Ring Rosalie Linklater Tel. 389-8945.

Junior Tournament – 11 April

Over 70’s Club

From December to present time we have a couple of great scores – congratulations to:

Dale Joy/Owen Gebbie, Fri 4 Dec – 73.21%

Deidre Forde/Ann Buckley (Visitor)

Mon 8 March – 74.84%

Congress?   How it is Defined

Have you ever wondered how and why we call some bridge events a ‘congress’.

A ‘congress’ is determined when any bridge contest or series of tournaments is conducted over at least 2 days and in addition to an ‘open’ grade tournament, there is at least one other tournament for lower grades such as a multigrade or intermediate.

The Very Special Birthday Girl

Hosted by Freda’s family at the Club rooms after Bridge, Friday 19 March – she was just a mere ‘94’.

Freda is our oldest playing member and has been associated with the Club for many years.  She joined shortly after the Club was started and after a period living in the Hawkes Bay rejoined when she returned to Wellington.

Pick up the Pen

Please, please don’t be afraid of the biro pen(s) hanging on the notice board – these are special and don’t bite.  If you wish to enter a tournament or buy a discount book, etc. write or print your name(s).  This would be very helpful.

The Lions Charity Tournament

Saturday, 8 May

Bridge and food.  It’s time again for that day great out; and it is only next month. Starting

around 9.30am with tea/coffee, a grand lunch prepared by Willie Wong, with drinks and nibbles at the end of play.  Entry is $25 and this year the Eastern Suburb Lions are raising money for ‘Camp Quality’ for children

 with cancer.

There will be raffles galore so come along for this enjoyable day

Administration

The Committee are looking for someone to attend to the Club admin duties.  If you are interested please call Tony 388 3472.   Register your interest by 12 April.

DIRECTORS CORNER  -  APRIL 2010

REVOKE

A revoke is a fairly common occurrence, (and also very frustrating for both the revoking player and partner, as most of us are aware).

The usual revoke is not following suit when able; but a revoke is also the failure to lead or play, when able, a card or suit required by the Laws.

The 2007 Laws brought about substantial changes to the rectification of a revoke, and for the director the application of the revoke law is now much simpler.

If the revoke card did not win the trick, then only one trick is transferred.

If the revoke card did win the trick, then two tricks are transferred.

Keep in mind that only tricks won from the revoke trick onwards can be transferred.

Even if the revoke would have made no difference to the number of tricks won, the director is bound by the Laws to transfer the prescribed number of tricks.

There are other ways to revoke, probably less well known:

Creating an abnormal trick (e.g. by not playing a card to it), is also treated as an established revoke costing one trick if the mistake is discovered after both sides have played to the next trick.

Similarly, if a player plays too many cards to a trick, this may also create a revoke, if the card should have been played to subsequent tricks (before the extra card is discovered).

A revoke is established when the offending side leads or plays to the next trick.

A revoke must be corrected if the player becomes aware of it before it becomes established; he/she should call the Director.

If a revoke occurs on the 12th trick, even if established, it must be corrected before all 4 hands are returned to the board.

There are a number of revoke situations which do not warrant transfer of tricks, including a revoke in dummy’s hand, or when both sides have revoked on the same board, or a subsequent revoke in the same suit by the same player.

Lastly, if the director deems that the non-offending side is insufficiently compensated for the damage caused by the revoke s/ he is empowered to assign an adjusted score by transferring more tricks to restore equity.

AGM

The Club AGM was held Wednesday 3 March and was attended by 24 members.  Many came and enjoyed a wine and a shared ‘fish and chip’ meal prior to the start of the meeting.  The meeting went well with all committee positions being filled.  Tony Sutich nominated unopposed is now our new president; and Lambros Kondogiannis is the new treasurer.  And welcome to our new committee member Cathryn Bridge.

Allan Joseph thanked Lorraine Sutich for all her work as treasurer (11 years) and presented her with a bouquet of flowers and vouchers for her long and loyal service to the Club.  Allan Joseph then read out a very nice card written by Susan on behalf of all Club members acknowledging Lorraine’s work in this role.

Thursday Night Survey Result

The main item of general business at the AGM was the results of the survey that was circulated mid-February regarding Thursday and general declining numbers at other sessions.  Tony summarised the responses and the majority indicated they wanted the status quo to remain.  And, the Friday afternoons sessions will definitely continue.  It was agreed by all those present to let the new committee discuss and make some arrangements for a trial of new ideas and then report progress back to club members, including a shorter playing year for the Thursday sessions.

Library

There is a surprising number of books overdue – 3 months in some cases.  Please check your book shelves, cabinets etc and return any books to the Club.  This will allow someone else the opportunity to read them.  If not, the Librarian is proposing an email reminder!  Like the public libraries 4 weeks is considered to be an appropriate period for a book loan.  And of course you can always get them out again.

THE  KERR  CUP

The Kerr Cup is an annual, enjoyable event played between the Kairangi and Kapi Mana Bridge Clubs.  The cup was presented by Dennis Kerr in 1989 when he moved to the Kapi Mana area and club, after having been President of our club in 1988-89.

Kapi Mana won the cup in the first 5 years (1989-93), with Kairangi winning it over the next 5 years (1994-98).  Kapi Mana then won it in 1999 and held on to it for a rather long 10 years (1999-2008), with many of the results going to the wire.  Kairangi finally wrested the cup back last year at home and we now hope it is our turn to have a long tenure!

Apart from last year when we won it on a “Teams” basis, the event has been contested on a “Pairs” basis and Kapi Mana have requested that we revert to a “Pairs” basis again. This means that Kairangi as the visiting club will have all its pairs seated for the night (including half of our pairs being stationary East / Wests), whilst all the Kapi Mana pairs will be on the move. Therefore Kairangi pairs only play against Kapi Mana pairs. At the end of the night, all the Kairangi pairs scores are added up and the winner of the cup is the club with the best aggregate of all its pairs scores.

This popular event has been played in a good friendly spirit between clubs of similar size and background, starting with a complimentary drink about 7.00 / 7.15pm, with play starting at 7.30pm and a light supper at the conclusion of play (about 10.30pm) when scores are being computed.

Please consider coming along and putting your name on the notice on our notice board and help us to hold onto the Kerr Cup.  This event will be played on Friday night 19 March and as we need to co-ordinate the same number of pairs with Kapi Mana, we would prefer to have entries on the notice board by Tuesday night 16 March. However, entries will be accepted up to Wednesday night 17 March on a first come first served basis by phoning Tony Sutich at 388.3472.

The Kairangi Bridge Club News Update – February 2010

Thanks

Thanks to all those who participated in a general clean up on Saturday 23 January where many treasures were discovered. ***  And, a big thank you to Wynn and Catherine for providing a delicious morning tea.

Thought - Be brave, take risks; because nothing substitutes experience.

New Year Honours

Warmest congratulations to Alan Kerr for his award in the 2010 New Year’s Honours List:  Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM).

Obituary

Katherine Smith

It is sad that I report the passing of Katherine, In December 2009.  She was a long time member and in recent times acted as librarian.  Katherine played mostly on a Friday afternoon and Wednesdays through the winter months.

Len Kitching

Len passed away late January; and many members attended his funeral.   He was a long time member having joined the Club in the 80’s.  In recent time he acted as Almoner and Friday co-ordinator.  Len gave up these roles due to failing health in September.  He was a popular member who cared very much about his Friday afternoon ladies, and gentlemen. One of the very best communicators always keeping in touch with those who were not so well.

Resignation

Regretfully Jim and Betty van Praag have resigned because with their move to the inner City the closest clubs are on Tinakori Road.  They were foundation members so it is with sadness we say farewell.

Also longtime members Bob and Margaret Condon have also tendered their resignation.  An invitation has been given to them to come and play occasionally as ‘visitors’.

Kerr Cup – Friday 19 March

A form is on the notice board for you to enter your partnership for this annual event.  Hosted this year by Kapi Mana at their Club rooms, Linden Avenue, Tawa.

*** Silent Auction

Treasures found at the Club clean-up are now being sold to Club members by way of a silent auction.  It is on the notice board now.

Look at this pair of exquisite glasses/ornaments and place an offer.   A very good reason to come and play a session of bridge.  Happy Bidding all  - the auction and the bridge!
