DIRECTORS CORNER

The following paragraph was part of an article in last month’s news.

[Every player should shuffle his/her original 13 cards before returning them to the board; this is so that the next player to hold the cards will not receive any information regarding the bidding or the play of the hand at the previous table. This is particularly relevant when there is a "passed in hand"].

To make it easier/quicker for all players just move a few cards, or cut-the-cards, before returning them to the board.

Also players should remember that they are not to touch any other players cards even after the cards have been returned into the respective pockets.

Reminders

For safety sake and to help prevent falls please keep handbags off the floor. Another request, please be quiet when the Director is speaking.

Food for Thought: The cardiologist’s diet: If it tastes good, spit it out!

The over "70’s Club"

Some of you have been asking the question what is this?? It is recognition of partnerships that have reached this amazing milestone.

Well Represented

Kairangi has Tony Sutich as a Committee Member, one of five, on the Wellington Regional Committee. This takes effect 1 July ’08 under the new structure of bridge in New Zealand.

Library Notes

Kate Smith is very quietly and diligently looking after the Club library. And, Kate has kindly forwarded the following article.

A repeated plea: please return overdue books. There is quite a long list of overdue books and as our bridge book collection is very small, they are missed.

Thank you for co-operation.

Keeping up attendances

This is a request to all members – "if you know of someone who has not been at bridge for some time why not ring them and invite them along to a session, or two".

Dealing Machine – A progress report: training is underway. Please be patient – as soon as possible most sessions will be using pre-dealt hands. Computers are wonderful but not quite like the magic wand, they do need human input. To deal one set of boards takes 2 people, one hour??

Coming up … 25 June ….

The Park Bowling Club ‘GREAT BRIDGE DAY’. Everyone welcome. Details later.

Wanted!

Proposal to Committee:

"Procedures for Complaints/Suggestions

That any suggestions/complaints/queries are not permitted to be made on behalf of someone who remains anonymous at any committee meeting, AGM or special general meeting. The only exception to this will be in the case of the President who will be the only person that can directly represent someone who wishes to remain anonymous and the President believes that there is justification for this. In addition, all suggestions put in the suggestions box, shall be signed, otherwise they may not be considered by the committee."

Approved Committee Meeting 27 March 2008

Thought: "Car Parks: a place where you pay to leave your car while dents are put in it"

DIRECTORS CORNER

In 2007 the Laws of Duplicate Bridge were revised by the World Bridge Federation and these new Laws come into effect from 1 June 2008.

The changes mostly affect the Directors, and N.Z. Bridge is presently organizing refresher training for existing Directors nationwide. Martin Oyston and Allan Joseph have both been invited from the Wellington area the first such training course in Auckland in May.

Players need not concern themselves except to slowly get use to some of the changes. A few easily remembered changes are –

An Introduction to Directing

An email was sent around the members, and copies pinned on the notice board about a series of three classes, on Saturday mornings during April. President Allan has kindly given his time to conduct these - so please consider joining these and making a very worthwhile contribution to the Club.

The Kairangi Bridge Club News Update – November 2007

Christmas Celebrations

This year the Club Christmas function is on Saturday 1 December, 7pm at the Club Rooms.  The format is:  drinks and nibbles on arrival, followed by a delicious meal.  Great entertainment is also promised.  (see the Noticeboard for details).

The cost of this evening is $30 per person.  Friends and family are welcome to join members for this special function.

We are currently asking Members to contribute to the raffle with items appropriate for the festive season. This raffle helps with the cost of the Christmas function, so everything you give will be very much appreciated.

Register Early

The new year is very close so let’s all be prepared and ready.  Entries for Interclub Bridge close early February.  It would be good if Kairangi were able to muster good representation, and have multiple teams at all levels.  Outside competition helps to raise the standard of playing within the Club.  Consider being part of a team, or organise one yourself.  Note - it is recommended that teams have a minimum of two substitutes.

Bridge Etiquette & Reminders

At the table

·         Dummy must not touch a card from dummy’s hand unless directed to do so by declarer.

·         Dummy should remain seated during the play of the hand.

·         The board must remain on the table during play.

Do you know!

Our Club rooms are available for hire.  The downstairs small room is ideal for meetings, with seating for up to 20 people.  The charge for the small room for a morning, afternoon or evening session 2-4 hours is $25.  Contact a Committee member regarding availability and arrangements.

Thought:  “Is Lotto a means of getting money for nothing or getting nothing for your money?”

Saturday Bridge – 17 November

Bring a friend or family member – everyone welcome.  The last evening for the year.  Saturday social bridge will run again next year starting in February.

Meeting

The next Committee Meeting, 5.45pm, Thursday, 15 November 2007.

Grade Night Restriction To Be Removed

The Committee has unanimously agreed with a submission (Graded Playing Nights at Kairangi) from Allan Joseph proposing “…. that in keeping with most other Clubs in our Centre this ‘Grade barrier’ be removed for a number of years.  This need not be irreversible.”  Please read the full submission which is on the noticeboard. Effective immediately.  Tuesday players are welcome to play on Monday nights.  However, Monday players who play on a Tuesday will still receive a 10% penalty.

Interclub – Round 8,   Friday 16 November

   Junior and Open:      Wellington

   Intermediate:            Victoria

Everyone Welcome

Members are invited at any time to bring along Bridge-playing friends or neighbours.  You may know of someone who belongs to another club and maybe happy to join Kairangi as an Associate member.

Lessons for Beginners 2008

Bridge lessons will be run again next year.  These are normally over 10 weeks with additional practise weeks.  No starting date has been set, but in the iterim tell your friends, family and neighbours about the bridge lessons.

Obituary   Sadly towards the end September ettie Lewis passed

Hettie Lewis and Arthur (Tug) Wilson passed away. Recently, Hettie had been playing Tuesday and  Friday afternoons; and many will remember Tug Wilson a life member of the Club.  Len Kitching, as Club Almoner, has posted tributes on the ‘tributes’ website.  Thanks Len.

The over ‘70’s Club’

During October some partnerships scored the ultimate – ‘70%’, or more.  Well done:

Don King/Stev Aranyi   (Friday 9 Oct)   70.37%

Anne Goodwin/Maureen Wilcock,

    (Holiday Monday 22 Oct.)                 70.00%
