Contact: Secretary for more information. History of the ClubThe Hutt Bridge Club was founded in 1966 by Messrs McCarroll and Watson, with a foundation membership of 102. The club was established at the Shandon Golf Club rooms, but moved to more permanent premises in Huia St in August 1968. Membership continued to grow and, following a fire in the Huia St premises in 1969, the club moved to larger premises in Queens Rd, leased from the City Council. In the early 1970s the club was over 250 members and had three playing nights, plus a night for lessons. In 1980, the club expanded into adjacent rooms and was operating five nights a week. The club moved to its present premises in 1982, firstly on a lease basis and purchasing the property in 1986. An extra playing room and offices were added in the early 90s when membership rose to over 500. The club celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2006, with a handful of founding members in attendance. Although membership has declined with competition from on-line bridge, the club continues with five evening and two afternoon playing sessions. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
