Special Awards at a Special Prizegiving Ceremony

The Cambridge Bridge Club held its annual prizegiving ceremony on Tuesday 30 November.  Three members of the club received special awards for their services rendered to the club.  Two service awards were announced, both to former teachers at the club:  Marie Davis who taught the Standard American style for many years, and Beat Moser, who taught ACOL style.  Both award winners have watched their students’ progress in the game and encouraged them on their journey.  Marie spoke of how rewarding she had found teaching bridge, with her students still coming up to her years later reminding her of how she had introduced them to a game that now gave them so much pleasure in life.  The highest honour the club bestows, life membership, was awarded to Michael Neels.   Contributing in so many ways to the club for over 15 years, he was described by Club President Alyson Clay, as a champion of the raising of bridge standards at the club, taking new members under his wing and mentoring them, as well as an invaluable Mr Fix-It.  He continues at the cutting edge of the new technology supporting competitive bridge. His own bridge playing abilities at tournaments and at the National Congress of New Zealand have helped to put the small Cambridge club on the bigger nationwide map.  The club also said farewell to two longstanding members of the club, Life Member Geoff Coleman and Livvy Bartrum who move to Hamilton.  Their huge contributions to the club through the years were acknowledged and recognised by all members present.
