In lesson 4, we learnt "forcing bids". ie when the responder changes suit, it forces the opener to bid at least once again. Remember:
- if the opener rebids same suit it usually promises a 6+card suit
- if the opener bids a second suit, it usually means the first bid suit now has 5+
- the opener rebids at the minimal level with 12-15 points, jumps one level wth 16-17 points and jumps two levels with 18-19 points
- if the opener rebids 1NT, s/he is denying a fit in a major suit and promising 15-16 points; and 17-18 points with rebid of 2NT and 19 points with 3NT.
How would you bid the following hands? West is dealer (ie starts bidding first!).

In lesson 3 (8 May), we learnt how to respond to the opening bid using LIMIT bids. These bids give your partner very specific information about your hand. If you have a fit in partner’s suit (ie 8+ cards in that suit between you and partner), you raise your partner in that suit:
6-9 points +1 level e g 1H – 2H
10-12 points +2 levels eg 1H – 3H
13+points +3 levels eg 1H – 4H
If you do not have a fit in partner’s opening suit and no 4+ card major suit to bid, you respond in NT:
6-9 points +1 level e eg 1H – 1NT
10-12 points +2 levels eg 1H – 2NT
13+points +3 levels eg 1H – 3NT
