President’s Report 2008
Welcome to the AGM of the Akarana Teams Group.
Your Committee of Eileen Horsman, (President), Richard Solomon, (treasurer), Tony Morcom, (Vice President), Steph Jacob, (Secretary), Tamar Turnwald, Alex Moore, (until his departure) Trevor Robb, Glenis Palmer, Nick Jacob, Susan Humphries and Barry McLean have continued to work hard on your behalf.
It has been great this year to see such consistently good numbers each week, and I know this is reflected in a healthy bank balance which Richard will tell you more about in his report.
Again, special thanks must go to Tamar who continues to be the heart and soul of the club, arriving first each evening to set up the room, keeping a sharp eye on supplies, and generally providing wonderful support to the committee, our members, and young Baristas.
To Nick Jacob (aided by his Dad Tom) who has organized the scoring and Swiss Draw for all Butler events.
To Richard Solomon, who fields the numerous calls for partners, organizes the Swiss Draw for all Teams events, and keeps us all honest in the financial department.
To Tony Morcom, and his wife Joy, who deal the duplicate sets of boards for us each week. Tony also organizes the Masterpoints and ensures regular updates on the display boards, and he is always willing and able to direct and score for our tournaments.
The committee has appreciated all the support from other club members:
Thanks to those who have helped committee members to set up the room and cover kitchen duties each week - Linda Cartner, (who also organises the Baristas), Owen Camp, Neil Stuckey, Carol Richardson, Gary Chen, Dong Huang, Jeter Liu, and Mike Dunn.
Jan Abel who has taken over responsibility for purchasing coffee, as well as covering for Tamar during her absence.
Bob Grover, who collects the Table Money each week.
Derek Evennett’s business, Clearlite Bathrooms, who once again sponsored our Swiss Pairs Tournament.
Lisa Jones who keeps results and other information posted on our Website. I am sure you have all noticed the great new look of this, which Lisa designed.
Anisia Shami who almost single-handedly organized the Christmas party Tournament
Congratulations to the winners of the Swiss Pairs Tournament, Julie Atkinson & Pat Carter, and to the Runners up, Jan Cormack & Grant Jarvis; and to the winners of the Christmas Party Tournament Jan Abel & Richard Solomon, and to the Runners up, Julie Atkinson & Pat Carter.
This year we have resurrected some of the battered and bruised trophies from the previous régime of the Akarana Club. We now have trophies for the winners of the Swiss Pairs, the Championship Teams, (The Al McLachlan Memorial Teams plate donated by Andy Braithwaite, Tony Morcom and Roger High) and Christmas Party Tournaments (Abraham’s Party Tournament in a previous life, donated by Stanley Abraham). The committee hopes that next year a Points Trophy will be introduced, as well as trophies for the most improved male and female players, but this will be the decision of the incoming committee.
